  • Overview

    The Resident Care Assistant provides personal care assistance and support for Residents in an individualized, professional manner, to help residents function at their highest level possible, and in accordance with each Service Plan. Assists with daily operational needs of the facility to help ensure quality of care. CNA licensure or experience, or demonstrates competency of all established CNA skills and guidelines while providing Resident care. Willingness and ability to effectively train new staff, helping them to be successful. Maintains a positive attitude. Responds appropriately to any urgent situations, ability to think critically and solve problems effectively. Excellent attendance, flexibility with schedule, and communication to promote and develop positive relationships with staff, residents, and others, addressing difficult topics tactfully and effectively. Acts as a role model to other staff leading by example. Demonstrates commitment to advancement through pursuit of training and advanced education.


    Work Schedule:  PRN/On-Call.  Minimum requirement of 32hrs/monthly & 3 on-call shifts/ monthly : 1 during the week, 2 weekend shifts



    • Maintain an awareness of abuse reporting requirements. Report all signs of abuse or potential abuse per facility protocol.
    • Practice good hand washing. Use Universal Precautions at all times. Use Contact or Airborne Isolation Precautions as needed.
    • Communicate effectively with resident families, friends, and health or financial representatives as needed, while observing HIPAA privacy guidelines.
    • Provide close monitoring and report any concerns, including change in resident condition, to the appropriate party within an appropriate timeframe per applicable policies and protocols. Ensure adequate documentation is completed
    • Read each resident’s care plan before providing care, and each time it is updated. Provide feedback to the update of the care plan per protocols as needed.

    Dementia Care and Behavior Support

    • Seek to discover effective non-drug interventions for individual residents’ challenging behavior issues, and communicate these with other staff. Respond proactively to the first signs of agitation.
    • Document behavior issues as needed.
    • Employ dementia care techniques and approaches to minimize resident resistance to care, agitation, and other challenging behavior. Communicate with other staff to brainstorm ideas as needed.

    Residential Care Values

    • Seek opportunities to allow each resident to have as much control and choice over his or her own life as possible, to the extent he or she is able. Treat each resident as an individual, and encourage others to uphold these same principles.
    • Treat residents, staff, and visitors with dignity and respect at all times.
    • Promote resident independence to the greatest degree possible by assisting them only as much as needed.
    • Promote a therapeutic and home-like atmosphere.

    Activity Therapy

    • Support planned and spontaneous activities, which are meaningful to each individual resident, to promote the highest possible level of resident functioning.
    • Escort residents on walks inside and outside the Care Suites as needed.
    • Escort residents to medical, social, or other appointments as needed on or off campus. Communicate effectively with medical providers and Resident Care Coordinators as needed regarding the appointment.
    • Engage residents who refuse to participate by approaching them differently or providing alternative activities.
    • Focus on what each resident CAN do and find ways to make them be or feel successful and/or useful.
    • Assist residents with opening mail as needed or desired by the resident, assist with writing and/or delivering outgoing mail as desired.
    • Ensure residents are kept informed about activities of interest and assist them to attend and/or participate as needed. 

    Activities of Daily Living

    • Provide and document assistance with personal care needs, including but not limited to:
      • Bathing, showers, whirlpools
      • Dressing
      • Personal grooming and hygiene
      • Toileting, incontinence, and catheter care
      • Mobility and movement
      • Ensure adequate nutrition and hydration as described in care plan
      • Assist with feeding in RA dining room as needed
      • Housekeeping tasks as needed to maintain standards of sanitation
      • Laundry tasks as needed
      • Escort or transport resident to and from other areas of facility for medical or social appointments as needed
      • Obtain vital signs as instructed
      • Assisting with treatments as instructed


    • Experience in care giving/nursing field preferred.
    • Must be CPR and first aid certified within the first month of employment and maintain certification at all times.
    • Must have sufficient communication and language skills to perform duties and communicate with residents, other staff, family members, health care professionals, etc., as needed including use of electronic medical record
